Importance of Heat Protection with Hot Tools

Today I wanted to share the importance of heat protectant with hot tools! I love to flat iron, curl, blow dry...all the things! But I can't stress this enough, you NEED to be using quality hot tools along with a good heat protectant.

Ok, so what happens if you are using cheap tools & no protection? It will cause damage to your hair. You will start to see your will dry out and split with damage all along the hair shaft

Your hair contains keratin proteins and hydrogen bonds. When you use heat styling tools, such as curling irons, flat irons, wavers or blow dryers, they strip your hair of its natural oils and proteins by breaking down its hydrogen bonds. This breaking down of hydrogen bonds is the same reason your heat styling tools are able to give you the look you want. They change your hair texture in order to achieve straightness, curliness or sleekness.

This is why it is so important to be mindful about which tools you are using and how you are protecting your hair.

Here are a few tips when it comes to heat styling :

1) Your hair needs to be COMPLETELY dry before putting heat on it! If you hear a sizzle that is not good, stop! Pick up the blow dryer and finish drying.

2) Turn your heat down! If you follow me on social media  (valdejonghair) you will hear me talk about this all the time. You do not need your tools on the highest setting, unless you have thick, coarse, curly hair. Most people do not need to have their tools higher than 315 degrees. A good way to think about your hot tools is like an oven. you wouldn't crank your oven up to the highest temperature and then try to bake some cookies. They would burn! Its the same with your hair.

3) Protect your hair before styling!! You need to protect your hair before you apply heat. My 2 personal favourites are the Blow Out Cream & Thermal Styling Shield from MONAT.
The Blow Out cream is going to protect your hair up to 350 degrees (silicone free). This is perfect for protection against the blow dryer, it is also going to give you incredible smoothness, softness & shine.
Thermal Styling Shield protects your hair up to 450 degrees (silicone free). This is an absolute MUST on your hair if you are going to be using any kind of hot tool.
Another important to thing to look for in your products is that they are SILICONE FREE!
If your products have silicone in them and then you apply heat, you are basically laminating your hair stands!

4) Look for good tools. Now I realize not everyone can afford top of the line professional tools so here are some things to look for when purchasing your tools.

  • With flat irons and straighteners, look for products that offer different temperature controls and have high quality plates. The newer products on the market have new technologies have helped flat irons become less damaging. So, if your flat iron is several years old, consider upgrading to a newer model.
  • Curling irons, like flat irons, should have different temperature controls. There are many types of curling irons available. Pick yours based on the size and shape of the curl you desire. A smaller barrel will result in smaller, tighter curls, and larger will create loose waves.
  • With blow dryers look for one that has a nozzle attachment, since those distribute heat more evenly. For curly hair you may also want to invest in a diffuser head for your blow dryer to spread the heat. If you can afford it, consider buying a salon-quality hair dryer because those typically have more powerful air flow than lower quality blow dryers.
My favourite blow dryer is the T3 Featherweight Lux 2I

2 curling irons are I love are from Babyliss & T3
